Briarcliff vs. Druid Hills, 1965

BRIARCLIFF BARONS ATHLETICS ARCHIVE documents the teams and athletes from BHS' opening in 1958 to its closing in 1987.

Baron athletes won 101 individual state championships, led by Nancy Chapman, who won eight state championships in swimming. Hundreds more Baron athletes placed at the state, region and county levels.

Sixteen Baron teams won state championships in wrestling, gymnastics, soccer and swimming, led by Baron Wrestlting, which won six consecutive state championships. An additional 48 Baron teams earned top-ten state rankings. Baron baseball, basketball and soccer teams qualified for state playoffs in 60's, 70's and 80's, led by Baron Soccer, with ten consecutive winning seasons (and three state championships).

Five Baron football teams posted winning or break-even seasons, one earned a state-ranking, several upset state-ranked teams, and one featured the Sports Illustrated Prep Punter of the Year.

Timeline

1956 - DeKalb County schools' enrollment increased, with Druid Hills High chool especially overcrowded. DeKalb approved a new school and purchased 21.7 acres of land on North Druid Hills Road that had been part of Tuggle Daries.

1957 - T. C. Brittain Construction Company of Decatur began building BHS.

1958 - DeKalb divided the Druid Hills district into two, with one for BHS. BHS opened with 442 students in the 8th and 9th grades under Principal Harold Schuler and 15 teachers. The original campus included "A" hall (offices), "B" hall (12 classrooms) and the cafeteria at a cost of $546,000, including land. BHS colors, originally maroon and gold, became blue and silver. Coach Sam Black named BHS students Barons, and an armored knight on horseback became the BHS emblem. Students published first editions of the BHS newspaper, Scroll, and yearbook, Shield. Football completed its first season.

1959 - BHS added 10th grade. Boys basketball completed its first season.

1960 - BHS added 11th grade. Enrollment increased to 1,202 students, and BHS began to experience overcrowding. Girls swimming became the first state-ranked team in BHS history finishing 9th in state. Baseball, track and wrestling completed their first seasons.

1961 - BHS enrollment increased to 1,642 students. Construction of "C" and "D" halls (41 classrooms and nine labs for science, home economics, art and language), the library, the gymnasium (capacity: 1,600), the music and industrial arts buildings was completed by Abco Construction at a cost of $1.4 million. BHS was formally dedicated on April 30 1961 by Mrs. Margaret Harris, Superintendent Jim Cherry and Reverend Max Milligan. Girls swimming finished 2nd in state. Wrestling finished 5th in state. Cross country and girls basketball completed their first seasons. In November Adams Memorial Stadium opened at a cost of $318,000.

1962 - BHS graduated its first senior class. Girls swimming finished 1st in state. Wrestling finished 1st in state. Boys basketball finished 12-10 and in the playoffs. Football upset region champion Decatur.

1963 - Russell Clark became Principal. Wrestling finished 1st in state. Cross country, girls swimming, and boys track each finished 3rd in state, and track defeated the 1962 state champion, Southwest High School (Atlanta). Boys swimming finished 8th in state. Girls basketball finished 15-7. Football upset 2nd-ranked Tucker and 5th-ranked Decatur. Gymnastics and tennis completed their first seasons.

1964 - BHS enrollment reached its all-time high of 2,470. Girls swimming finished 1st in state. Wrestling finished 1st in state. Track finished 4th in state. Boys swimming finished 6th in state. Cross country finished 10th in state. Football finished 4-3-3, its first winning season. Girls basketball finished 14-6.

1965 - BHS overcrowding was relieved by Lakeside High School opening. John Bolin became Principal. Wrestling finished 1st in state. Track finished 2nd in state, the best finish in BHS history. Boys swimming finished 8th in state. Football finished 5-4-1, its second consecutive winning season and tied for best record in BHS history.

1966 - Harry Jaynes become Principal. Wrestling finished 1st in state. Track finished 3rd in state. Girls swimming finished 7th in state. Boys swimming finished 8th in state. Boys basketball finished with the best record in BHS history (22-4), won the Cross Keys Invitational Tournament, and advanced to the playoffs. Girls basketball advanced to the playoffs. Football started 1-0 and was ranked 10th in state, its first and only state ranking. Girls gymnastics finished 1st in county (the highest level of competition).

1967 - Wrestling finished 1st in state. Boys swimming finished 5th in state. Girls swimming finished 9th in state. Girls gymnastics finished 1st in county (the highest level of competition). Boys basketball finished 17-5 and won the Cross Keys Invitational Tournament. Baron girls basketball finished 14-5. Football upset Southwest DeKalb.

1968 - Girls swimming finished 1st in state. Soccer completed its first season and finished 1st in state. Wrestling finished 5th in state. Girls basketball finished 13-6 and in the playoffs. Girls gymnastics finished 1st in county (the highest level of competition). Boys basketball finished 17-6 and upset Decatur, ranked 1st in state, on BHS Homecoming.

1969 - Girls gymnastics finished 2nd in state. Girls swimming finished 4th in state. Wrestling finished 10th in state. Five BHS tennis players won state championships, the most in BHS history. Soccer finished 8-1-1. Boys basketball finished 13-9.

1970 - Ernest Hallford became Principal. Wrestling finished 9th in state. Soccer finished 9-2 and in the playoffs.

1971 - Soccer finished 11-1-2 and 1st in state. Baseball finished 18-9 and 2nd in state. Girls swimming finished 4th in state. Boys gymnastics finished 5th in state. Boys basketball finished 15-9 and in the playoffs. Football finished 5-5, tied for most wins in school history.

1972 - Soccer finished 13-1 and 1st in state. Boys gymnastics and girls swimming both finished 4th in state. Wrestling finished 5th in state. Boys swimming finished 7th in state. Baseball finished 12-5.

1973 - Boys gymnastics finished 2nd in state. Girls swimming finished 3rd in state. Wrestling finished 5th in state. Baseball finished 21-5 and in the playoffs. Soccer finished 7-1-2. Girls basketball finished 16-7.

1974 - Boys gymnastics finished 1st in state. Girls swimming finished 4th in state. Soccer finished 9-2-1 and in the playoffs. Baseball finished 10-8.

1975 - Pat Williams became Principal. Girls swimming finished 6th in state. Wrestling finished 10th in state. Baseball won the sub-region championship. Soccer finished 6-3-1. Girls track completed its first season.

1976 - Byron Collier became Principal. Boys swimming finished 7th in state. Soccer finished 10-2 and in the playoffs. Baseball finished 21-5 and was region runner-up. Boys basketball finished 18-9. Baron girls cross country completed its first season.

1977 - Boys gymnastics finished 1st in state. Wrestling finished 9th in state. Soccer finished 8-1-1 and in the playoffs. Baseball finished 16-5 and was region runner-up.

1978 - Boys gymnastics finished 1st in state. Baseball finished 16-6.

1979 - Boys gymnastics finished 1st in state. Wrestling finished 7th in state. Baseball finished 24-5 and in the playoffs. Soccer finished 8-1-1. Girls basketball finished 18-5, the best record in BHS history. Basketball finished 15-10.

1980 - Wrestling finished 10th in state. Baseball finished 24-4 and in the playoffs. Soccer finished 8-2.

1981 - Baseball finished 12-8. Girls soccer completed its first season.

1982 - Mary Rivenbark became Principal. Boys cross country finished 2nd in state. Girls track completed an undefeated season. Baseball finished 13-9.

1983 - Baseball finished with the most wins in BHS history (26-7) and 2nd in state. Boys cross country finished 2nd in state. Football finished 5-4-1, tied for best record in BHS history.

1984 - Football finished 4-4-1.

1985 - Jennie Springer became Principal. Boys basketball finished 16-8.

1986 - After several years of declining enrollment at BHS the County reassigned the BHS 8th and 9th graders to Druid Hills for the 1986-1987 school year, and decided to close BHS following the school year. Girls basketball finished 12-9. Soccer finished 7-5-1. The last BHS football team defeated Druid Hills 10-9.

1987 - BHS, with a final enrollment of approximately 400 students in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades, graduated its final senior class, closed and merged into Druid Hills. Wrestling finished 7th in state and 1st in region. Baseball finished 18-9. Girls basketball finished 14-11.

BARONS HALL

Druid Hills High School maintains Barons Hall, a tradition that was established in 1962 at BHS. Barons Hall honors seniors who have excelled in the areas of athletics, leadership, service, the arts, academics, and foreign languages. During the regular season, the Barons defeated 1962 AAA State Track Champion Southwest High School of Atlanta 83-53.

1964 Baron track and field (above) finished 4th in state Barons state-ranked eight times including two individual championships including Andy Guy (1st, 220 Yard Dash), Andy Guy (1st, 100 Yard Dash), Bruce Chase (3rd, One Mile), Eddie Branch (4th, Pole Vault) and Craig Brewer, Bill Calhoun, Tommy Cheatham, Andy Guy (4th, 440 Yard Relay). Captains are Andy Guy and Bruce Chase. 1965 Baron track and field (above) finished 2nd in state with Barons state-ranked 14 times individual eight championships and three college scholarships awarded including Tom Cheatham, Eddie Branch, Bruce Cox, Andy Guy (1st, 440 Yard Relay), Andy Guy (1st, 100 Yard Dash), Chris Purvis (1st, One Mile), Chris Purvis (1st, Half Mile), Eddie Branch (1st, Pole Vault), Harry Hendrix, Bill Calhoun, Tom Cheatham, Andy Guy (2nd, Mile Relay), Andy Guy (2nd, 200 Yard Dash) and Bill Calhoun (4th, Half Mile). College scholarships were awarded to Andy Guy (Florida State), Chris Purvis (Georgia Tech), Bobby Stokes (Miami FL). This was the most successful track and field team in school history. 1966 Baron track and field (above) finished 3rd in state with Barons state-ranked seven times including five state championships including Eddie Branch (1st, Pole Vault), Jack Nicholson, Jim Rogers, Bruce Cox, Craig Brewer (1st, 440 Yard Relay),Bill Calhoun (2nd, Half Mile) and Hal Padgett (2nd, Triple Jump). 1967 Baron track and field (above) finished with 1 individual state-ranked performance, Bob Bleiberg (2nd, Long Jump).1968 Baron track and field (above) finished with a record of 7-3; Bob Smith, Mike Chase, Tony Bell and Alan Strickland won the DeKalb County Championship in the mile relay; Bell, Fussell, Rogers and Brown won the DeKalb County Championship in the 440 Yard Relay, Bob Rogers set school records in the 120 Yard High Hurdles and in the 180 Yard Low Hurdles in the DeKalb County Meet, and the team placed 5th in the DeKalb County.

In 24 seasons Baron Cross Country finished 2nd in state twice (1982 and 1983, led by Dan Nisbet, above), and 3rd in state, 9th in state, and 10th in state twice for a total of 6 top-ten-in-state finishes.

BARON CROSS COUNTRY COACHES

James Lentz became in 1961. The 1963 team finished 3rd in state and undefeated in the regular season.
Fred Powell became coach in 1964. His team finished 10th in state, 1st in region, 1st in county, and finished with a 10-1 record in the regular season.
James Rentz became coach in 1965. His team finished 9th in state and 4th in county.
Ray Hambrick became coach in 1966 and his team finished 10th in state.
Thomas McAlpine became coach in 1970.
Thomas Neal became coach in 1972.
Gerald Jabaley became coach; his 1978 girls team finished 3rd in state and 1st in county.

Baron boys cross country finished 2nd in state with team members Dan Nisbet (2nd in state), Paul Clement (3rd in state), Johnny Roberts, Bobby Flowers, John Fiveash, Jimmy Baxter and Shane Short. The team finished the state meet tied for first place with Lovett. 25 years after the tie, Barons Coach Robert Nowell explained the tiebreaker in an email: "In Cross Country to break a tie you go to the teams 5th place runner. In this case Lovett's 5th place runner passed Briarcliff's 5th place runner in the chute just a few feet from the finish line." The team also finished 2nd in region, 4th in county and with a regular season record of 7-3. Baron girls cross country finished 3rd in region, 7th in county and with a regular season recordof 6-3.

BARON FOOTBALL TIMELINE 1958 Baron football (above) competed in the first football season in BHS history against a schedule of four Junior Varsity and two Varsity teams. Captains were Frank Cohort, George Giles and Guy Camuso. On the first offensive play in BHS history Bill McNatt scored a touchdown on a 65 yard run. With no football facilities at BHS, the Barons practiced at W. D. Thompson Elementary School and played all of its games away from home.

1959 Baron football (above) finished 2-3-1. Allen Montgomery was named to The Atlanta Journal All State Team. The team was led by Captains Guy Camuso and Larry Rutledge. Again all practices and games were away from home. 1960 Baron football (above) finished 3-7, upset 5-5 Baldwin by 26 points, and shutout one opponent. The Barons competed in the first schedule of all-Varsity competition, and earned the first Varsity football victory in BHS hisory, defeating Forsyth County. The Barons also defeated Newton County. Captains were Johnny Bradford and Larry Rutledge. Guy Camuso scored the first touchdown in all-Varsity competition in BHS history. Again all practices and games were away from home.

1961 Baron football (above) finished 3-7 with two shuout victories, the 8th-best defense in BHS history (167 points allowed in 10 games), and a 33 point victory over Forsyth County (6th highest margin of victory in BHS history). Larry Rutledge, Guy Camuso and Horace Goza were named to the Greater Atlanta All-Star team. Captains were Skip Evans, Guy Camuso and Jim Pender. Fred Chance was named Most Outstanding Back. Jim Pender was named Most Outstanding Lineman. Larry Rutledge was named Most Valuable Player.

Adams Memorial Stadium was completed in time for the final game of the 1961 season. In a newspaper article headlined, "Barons Stomp Devils in Stadium Spectacle," The DeKalb New Era reported, "The Briarcliff Barons fulfilled their part of the opening ceremonies of the new Adams Memorial Stadium last Friday night with a 13-0 victory over Druid Hills ... Even though the night was cold the 8,000 capacity mark was almost reached as fans crowded into the new stands." In the game Henry "Bird Nest" Faucette of BHS scored the first touchdown in Adams stadium history on a 20 yard run, and Freddy Chance of BHS scored the second touchdown in stadium history on a seven yard run. Other BHS standouts recognized from this game by The DeKalb New Era were Johnny Bradford, Guy Camuso, Mike Milligan and Horace Goza. The Barons also defeated Clarkston.

1962 Baron football (above) finished 1-8-1 and upset 7-4-1 Decatur (which went on to with the region championship and be ranked 5th in state).1963 Baron football (above) finished 4-5-1, upset 11-2 Tucker (which advanced to the third round of the state playoffs and was ranked 2nd in state) and also upset 8-3 Decatur (which advanced to the state playoffs and was ranked 5th in state, and finished 8-3). BHS also tied 7-2-1 Clarkston. The Barons finished the season with the 5th best defense in BHS history (157 points in 10 games) and one shutout victory. BHS also defeated Cross Keys and Southwest DeKalb. Opponent Avondale finished 12-1 and won the state championship. Captains were Scott Miller and David McDonald.

1964 Baron football (above) finished 4-3-3, the first winning season in BHS history. They were the only team in BHS history to start 3-0, was one of only two BHS teams to advance to 3-0-1. The Barons had the 3rd best defense in in BHS history (130 points in 10 games), shutout 3 teams (tied for 2nd in school history), and upset 5-3-2 Gordon. The Barons also defeated Russell by 27 points (10th-largest margin of victory in school history), Gainesville and Tucker. Four Barons -- Mike Hannon, Ken Harpe, Phil Houston and Bob Stokes -- were named to The Atlanta Journal All State Team. Bob Stokes led the nation in high school football punting (his 39 punts averaged 43.7 yards), was named Prep Punter of the Year by Sports Illustrated, and signed a college football scholarship (University of Miami). Team awards were given to Andy Guy (Most Valuable Offensive Back), Phil Houston (Most Valuable Offensive Lineman), Terry Warren (Most Valuable Defensive Lineman), Mike Hannon (Most Valuable Defensive Back), Ken Harpe (Hussle Award) and Terry Covington (Coaches Award).

1965 Baron football (above) finished 5-4-1 (tied for best record in BHS history). The Barons were the only team in BHS history to close 3-1. The Barons fielded the best defense in BHS history (120 points in 10 games), the 3rd best offense in BHS history (158 points in 10 games), shutout three teams (tied for 2nd most in school history), tied Druid Hills (which finished 8-1-1 and ranked 9th in state), defeated Gordon by 41 points (3rd highest margin of victory in school history), and defeated Campbell Smyrna, Gainesville, Russell and Cross Keys. 1966 Baron football (above) finished 4-6. The Barons upset Druid Hills in the season opener by 20 points, after which The Atlanta Journal ranked Briarcliff 10th in state, the first and only state ranking in BHS history. The Barons fielded the best offense in BHS history (198 points and 3,154 yards in 10 games), upset 6-3-1 Chamblee, defeated Dykes by 42 points (2nd highest margin of victory in school history), defeated Cross Keys, and recorded one shuout. Both Larry Graham and Bill Peake were named to The Atlanta Journal All State Team and signed college football scholarships (East Tennessee State University). 1967 Baron football (above) finished 4-6 and upset 5-5 Southwest DeKalb 31-0 (7th largest margin of victory in BHS history). The Barons fielded the 5th best offense in BHS history (150 points in 10 games), defeated Cross Keys by 30 points (8th highest margin of victory in school history), and defeated Athens and Dykes. BHS shutout 4 teams (most shutouts in school history), defeated Cross Keys by 50 points (highest margin of victory in school history), fielded the 2nd-best offense in BHS history (177 points in 10 games) and the 4th-best defense in BHS history (140 points in 10 games), defeated Tucker by 23 points, and also defeated Habersham Central, Druid Hills and Sequoyah. Elliot Price was named to The Atlanta Journal All-State First Team and signed a college football scholarship (Georgia Tech).

1972 Baron football (above) finished 2-8, defeated Cross Keys and Druid Hills, and shut out two opponents. Opponent Lakeside finished 14-0 and won the state championship. 1977 Baron football (above) finished 0-10 in the school's final season in the state's largest classification (AAA). The Decatur-DeKalb News Era reported that the Barons had "...to go up against top notch competition week after week, with very few people to take into battle...[Coach Bruce Stephens said] 'We've been playing out of our class...We'll almost be able to drop to Class A when the reclassification comes next year...We've got our share of good players for the size school we are.'" The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported: "Top linemen in the program...are Al Carlsen and Greg Helms...Stephens regards [Bob] Bracewell, an outside linebacker and tight end 'a hard hitter, a go-getter.'" Opponent Clarke Central finished 14-0 and won the state championship.

1978 Baron football (above) finished 3-7, defeating Druid Hills, Sequoyah and Walker and shutting out one opponent.1979 Baron football (above) finished 2-8, upset 6-4 Walker, defeated Gordon, and fielded the 9th-best offense in BHS history (102 points in 10 games). Opponent Redan finished 14-1 and won the state championship.

1980 Baron football (above) finished 1-9 and defeated Sequoyah.

1981 Baron football finished 0-10. 1982 Baron football (above) finished 1-9, earning a shut out win over Hapeville.

1983 Baron football (above) finished 5-4-1 (tied for best record in BHS history). The Barons fielded the 2nd-best defense in BHS history (124 points in 10 games), shut out 3 teams (tied for 2nd in BHS history), fielded the 4th best offense in BHS history (158 points in 10 games). BHS defeated Dawson County by 35 points (tied for 4th highest margin of victory in BHS history), upset 9-3 Campbell Fairburn, (which advanced to the second round of the state playoffs) by 22 points, defeated Sequoyah by 21 points, and defeated Cedar Grove. The DeKalb News Sun reported on BHS, "Can [the] Barons burn anyone with all that speed? ... [BHS has] the skill players to throw together one of the most exciting offenses Briarcliff has seen in years ... depth at running back ... quality receivers ... solid offensive linemen ... "surprising Briarcliff ... [has] a suddenly potent offense ... [BHS is] not be be taken lightly by anyone." The Sun selected Briarcliff as the "Team of the Week," as BHS was starting 3-0-1. In the win over Ridgeview that clinched the winning season, linebacker Andy Chandler had eight tackles, three assists, returned a fumble 22 yards to set up a touchdown and intercepted a pass, earning the "DeKalb News Sun Defensive Player of the Week" award. Other players frequently called out for valuable performances during the season by the DeKalb News Sun were Mike Arogeti, Keith Dawson, Brian Galloway, Harold Franco, John Hayes, Richard Hughes, Darrell Landy, Sammy Padgett, Chris Paschal, Xavier Reynolds, Robert Smith, Johnny Swift, Reggie Tucker and Theron Wynn. Coach Ron Young was named DeKalb County Coach of the Year. 1984 Baron football (above) finished 4-4-1. The Barons fielded the 6th-best offense in BHS history (125 points in 9 games), upset 5-4-1 Sequoyah, defeated Decatur by 35 points (tied for 4th highest margin of victory in BHS history), shutout 1 team, and defeated Cedar Grove and Cross Keys. Reginald Tucker earned a college football scholarship (Albany State University). Keith Dawson ranked 8th in receiving and 12th in rushing in DeKalb County.

1985 Baron football finished 4-6, defeated Decatur by 28 points (9th largest margin of victory in school history), and defeated Cedar Grove, Cross Keys and Decatur (a second time).

1986 Baron football (above) finished 2-8, defeating Druid Hills 10-9 in the rivals' final game before their merger, and also defeating Cross Keys 17-6 for the final football victory in school history.

Baron Baseball

In 28 seasons of Baron Baseball, fourteen teams earned winning records, one team broke even, four teams finished with losing records, and nine teams' records are unknown.

The 1983 team won more games than any other Baron Baseball team, finished 26-7, and advanced to the State Championship Final Series.

Rob English coached ten Baron baseball teams beginning in 1970. His best records at Briarcliff were 18-9 (1971, playoffs), 12-5 (1972), 21-5 (1973, playoffs), 21-5 (1976), 16-5 (1977), 16-6 (1978), 24-5 (1979, playoffs), 24-4 (1980, playoffs). After Briarcliff at Brookwood and won the state championship in 1986. He then became a professional baseball scout with the Atlanta Braves and later with the Boston Red Sox. Robert Nowell coached the final seven Baron baseball teams to an overall record of 98-46. His best records at Briarcliff were 12-8 (1981), 13-9 (1982), 26-7 (1983 state championship finalist and most wins in a single season in Briarcliff history), and 18-9 (1987, after he "un-retired" and returned to coach the final Barons baseball team). He was previously head baseball coach at Sequoyah where he won a state championship and also at Druid Hills. Briarcliff retired his #13 jersey.

BHS won the region playoffs and advanced to the state playoffs. In the first round of the state playoffs they defeated highly-regarded Walker and their pitcher Scott Ayers who went on to be selected in the professional baseball draft. The Barons defeated Forest Park in the 2nd round, and advanced to the state championship finals where they were defeated by Jordan, finishing 18-9. Pitcher Tim Martin achieved an ERA of 0.71, played college baseball at the University of Pennsylvania, and remains among the all-time DeKalb County leaders in ERA.

1972 Baron baseball finished 12-5 and featured two All-County players: Mickey Langley and Doug Perdue, who led the county with a .511 batting average .

1973 Baron baseball (above) finished 21-5, won the Atlanta Dugout Club Classic championship (by defeating Campbell) and won the region championship (by defeating reigning state champion Sequoyah). The team featured All-Region player Mickey Langley (Braves 400 Club Player of the Year, Metro Atlanta Prep Player of the Year, 8AAA Player of the Year, 8AAA Hitter of the Year, All-County, a .429 batting average and an 8-2 pitching record), All-Region player Sandy Grove (8AAA Pitcher of the Year with a 9-1 record) and All-County player Doug Perdue (with a .367 batting average). Rob English was named as the Braves 400 Club Coach of the Year and DeKalb County Coach of the Year. The team advanced to the state playoffs where they were defeated in a three-game first round series by LaGrange, after which the Decatur DeKalb News Era quoted Coach English as saying, "We gave the (third) game away...(but) I still think we've got the soundest team in the state."

1974 Baron baseball baseball (above) finished with a record of 10-8. Mickey Langley finished with season batting average of .431, a career pitching record of 26-7 and signed a college baseball scholarship with Georgia Tech.

1975 Baron baseball (above) won the subregion championship and featured Bill Vaughn who signed with DeKalb Central and sophomore pitcher Angier Wills who finished with a 6-1 record.

1976 Baron baseball (above) finished 21-5 and advanced to the region playoff finals where they were defeated by Clarke Central.

1977 Baron baseball (above) finished 16-5 and advanced to the region playoff finals where they were defeated by Sequoyah. The Decatur DeKalb News Sun called Angier Wills "the backbone of the Briarcliff pitching staff" for his 8-3 record, 1.59 earned run average, 94 strikeouts and only 14 walks.

1978 Baron baseball (above) finished 16-6, featured All-County player Lazaro "Chicho" Sanchez, and was defeated in a "play-in" game to advance to the region playoffs.

1979 Baron baseball (above) finished 24-5 and advanced to the state playoffs where they were defeated in a three-game series in the first round by Winder-Barrow.

1980 Baron baseball (above) finished 24-4 and advanced to the state playoffs where they were defeated by Ringgold in the first round. Juan Adan (below) was the county RBI leader with 50. Pitcher Jeff Bowers was 13-2 and pitcher John Levinge was 10-2, and beth are pitchers among the all-time county leaders in pitching wins in one season and in most innings pitched. 1981 Baron baseball finished 12-8. Juan Adan (above) hit .536, became a Briarcliff batting average leader and was awarded a college scholarship (DeKalb Central).

1982 Baron baseball finished 13-9.

1983 Baron baseball (above) finished 26-7 (most wins in school history) and advanced to the state playoffs, defeated Darlington in the 1st round, defeated Duluth in the 2nd round, and advanced to the state championship finals where they were defeated by Harlem in a three-game series that The Atlanta Journal Constitution called "controversial." Jimmy Hitt led the county in pitching wins with a record of 14-2 and is among the all-time county leaders in most wins in one season, led the county with 121 strikeouts, led the county with a 1.20 ERA, was a Briarcliff leader with 38 runs scored in one season, and was awarded a college scholarship (Chipola Junior College). Steve Dennis led the county with 40 RBIs, tied for the county lead with 13 HRs, and was awarded a college scholarship (DeKalb South). Degbis Ulloa tied for the county lead with 4 triples and was awarded a college scholarship (DeKalb South). David Cervasio was awarded a college scholarship (DeKalb South).

BARON BASKETBALL TIMELINE

1959 Baron basketball (above) was the first basketball team in school history. Captains were Guy Camuso (23) and Timo Kokko (21). With no gymnasium at Briarcliff all practices and games were held away from home. 1960 Baron basketball (above) again practriced and played all games away from home. Captains were Guy Camuso and Timo Kokko. 1961 Baron basketball (above) finished 0-20. Captains were Guy Camuso (30) and Bill Woodall (22). Again all practices and games were held away from home.

1961 Baron girls basketball (above) was the first girls basketball team in school history. Captains were Gene Skypek and Gail Cox.

1962 Baron basketball (above) finished 12-10, placed third in the region and advanced to the state playoffs where they were defeated by North Whitfield (17-7) in the first round. Captains were Timo Kokko and Bill Woodall. Most valuable player was Bill Woodall. Top rebounder was John Olson. With the Briarcliff Gymnasium now complete, the Barons played a schedule that included home games. 1962 Baron girls basketball (above) finished 1-18. Most Valuable Player was Gail Cox.

Captains were Roger Anderberg and Byron Farmer.1964 Baron girls basketball (above) finished 14-6.1965 Baron basketball (above) finished 9-12 and were led by pre-season all-region player and team leading scorer Doug Stott (42) with 311 points and leading rebounder Bob Buck (54) with 205 rebounds). Stott also set a new single season records for free-throw percentage (75.1 percent) and a new single-game record for rebounds, with 21 versus Druid Hills.

1966 Baron basketball (above) finished 22-4 (best record in school history), won the Cross Keys Christmas Basketball Tournament, and advanced to the state playoffs where were defeated by Baker (28-0) by two points in overtime in the first round. Donn James (32) went on to play at Furman University and Ron Welch (back row, far left) earned a scholarship to the University of Miami.

1966 Baron girls basketball (above) advanced to the state playoffs where they were defeated by South Cobb in the first round. 1967 Baron basketball (above) finished 17-5 and won the Cross Keys Christmas Basketball Tournament. Jim Whittemore (34) and Chuck Dowdle (52) continued their basketball careers at Brigham Young University and the University of Georgia, respectively.

1968 Baron basketball (above) finished 17-6 and were awarded the WQXI Team of the Week Trophy for defeating Decatur, which was ranked #1 in state, 52-41 at the Barons' Homecoming.

1968 Baron girls basketball (above) finished 13-6 and advanced to the state playoffs where they were defeated by Southwest DeKalb in the first round.

1970 Baron basketball finished 9-13. The Decatur DeKalb News Era named David Ruben (25) as one of its "Super 5" best five basketball players in DeKalb County in the five year period of 1969-1973.

1971 Baron basketball (above) finished 15-9 advanced to the state playoffs where they were defeated by Avondale (22-1) by two points in the first round. This was the final team coached by Ray Hambrick at Briarcliff. The Decatur DeKalb News Era named Chuck Steinbruegge (14) as one of its "Super 5" best five high school players in DeKalb County during the five-year period 1969-1973, calling him "one of the state's finest players" and reporting that he set new scoring records for his career, for a single season and for a single game. As a senior he was the leading scorer in the region averaging 23 points per game.

1973 Baron basketball (above) finished with a record of 5-20. Marc Allard won the team's Most Valuable Player Award and Kim Fox won the Best Defender Award.

1973 Baron girls bsketball (above) finished with a record of 16-7. However as the Decatur DeKalb News Sun reported, it was alleged that the team intentionally lost the 8AAA subregion championship game to Henderson in order to play an opponent in the next round that it considered to be easier to defeat than the team it would have played had it defeated Henderson. Principal Ernest Hallford investigated the allegation, determined that it was true but that Coach Edwina Bryan was not involved, and withdrew the team from the 8AAA region playoffs.

1974 Baron basketball (above) was the first coached by Ralph Nunn. The team featured All-County Player Art Adams (who averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game), All-County Player Mike Blackman (who averaged 17 points per game and was second in DeKalb County with an 82.4 free throw shooting percentage) and Mike Lee (who led DeKalb County with a 65.7 field goal shooting percentage)

1976 Baron basketball (above) finished 18-9; the most wins by Briarcliff in ten years, and the second-most wins in school history. Coach Ralph Nunn was named DeKalb County Coach of the Year. At one point in the season the Decatur DeKalb News Era reported,

"Briarcliff has the best 12-5 team in the state. The Barons seem to be rolling now."

College scholarship players were Corky Umstead (24), who averaged 19 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists per game and signed with West Georgia College, and John Larrimore (32). This team was one win away from qualifying for the state playoffs when, according to Eddie Leiker (52), "Lakeside got lucky."

Nancy Chapman won eight state championships in swimming, more than any other Baron in any other sport. As a freshman in 1961 she won the 200 yard freestyle and the 400 yard freestyle. As a sophomore in 1962 she again won the 200 yard freestyle and the 400 yard freestyle. As a junior in 1963 she won the 100 yard butterfly and the 400 yard freestyle. As a senior in 1964 she won the 100 yard butterfly and was a member of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay team.

Overall, Baron Girls Swimming finished 1st in state three times, 2nd in state once, 3rd in state twice, 4th in state four times, 6th in state once, 7th in state once, and 9th in state twice for a total of 14 top-ten-in-state finishes in 26 seasons, during which Baron Girls Swimmers also won 21 individual state championships.

In 20 years of Baron Boys Soccer, thirteen teams earned winning records (including ten consecutive winning records from 1968-1977 and three state championships) and seven teams posted losing records.

The 1972 Baron Boys Soccer team (above) won more games in a single season than any other Baron Boys Soccer team, finished 13-1, and won the state championship.

In seven years of Baron Girls Soccer, two teams (1983 and 1984) posted break-even records, four teams posted losing records, and one teams' record is unknown.

BARON BOYS SOCCER COACHES

John Jones became the first Baron soccer coach in 1968, went 10-0-1, and won the state championship.
Tally Johnson became coach in 1969. In six seasons his Briarcliff teams won two state championships and compiled a 57-8-6 record, 8-1-1 (1969), 9-2 (1970, playoffs), 11-1-2 (1971, state championship), 13-1 (1972, state championship), 7-1-2 (1973) and 9-2-1 (1974, playoffs).
John Shughart became coach in 1975 (6-3-1).
Jim Adamson became coach in 1976. His best records at Briarcliff were 10-2 (1976, playoffs) and 8-1-1 (1977, playoffs).
Jack Nicks became coach in 1979. His best records at Briarcliff were 8-1-1 (1979), 8-2 (1980) and 7-5-1 (1986).
Joe O'Neal coached the final Baron soccer team in 1987.

1968 Baron soccer (above) finished 10-0-1 (only undefeated soccer team in school history), won the DeKalb County championship, won the region championship and tied for the state championship by defeating Bass in 1st round, Westminster in 2nd round and tying North Springs in championship finals.1969 Baron soccer (above) finished 8-1-1.1970 Baron soccer (above) finished 9-2 and advanced to the state playoffs where they were defeated in the first round by North Springs (the 1969 state champion and 1968 co-champion).

1971 Baron soccer finished 11-1-2 and tied for the state championsip by defeating Forsyth County in 1st round, Wills in 2nd round, Druid Hills in 3rd round, and tying Darlington in championship finals. Two Barons were named to the Atlanta Chiefs Soccer Booster Club All Star Team: David Taylor, who was also named as State Tournament Most Valuable Player, and Nicky Strange.

1972 Baron soccer (above) finished 13-1 (most wins in school history) and won the state championship by earning byes in the 1st and 2nd rounds, then defeating North Fulton in 3rd round, Westminster in 4th round, Marietta in 5th round, and Druid Hills in championship finals. Four Barons were named All-State Players: Steve Alhadeff, Billy Light (who was also named as an Atlanta Chiefs Soccer Booster Club All Star), Scott Bracewell and Larry Carter. Five Barons were named All-Region Players: Steve Alhadeff, Scott Bracewell, Larry Carter, Donnie Goldstein and Moe Soriano. Two Barons were named All-County Players: Scott Bracewell and Larry Carter.

Sam Black (above) established the Baron wrestling program, coached its first seven seasons and won five consecutive state championships.

In its 28 seasons Baron Wrestling finished 1st in state six times, 5th in state four times, 7th in state twice, 9th in state twice, and 10th in state three times for a total of 18 top-ten-in-state finishes.

1962 Baron wrestling (above) won the state championship by 50 points over 2nd place Avondale (school record for widest margin of victory in state wrestling tournament), with 12 state-ranked wrestlers: Michael Godlewski (1st), William Harper (1st), Ray Harrelson (1st), Michael Swanson (1st), Larry Wiggins (2nd), Michael Norman (2nd), Julius Napoles (2nd), Allen Montgomery (2nd), Ronald Stripling (4th), James Reeves (4th), Alex Bothwell (4th) and Stephen Godlewski (4th). The Barons won the region championship and tied with Avondale for the county championship. Of the county wrestling tournament the DeKalb New Era reported, "Briarcliff and Avondale battled right down to the wire before a crowd of 1,200 and emerged as co-champions of the first DeKalb County wrestling tournament ... [and] topped defending state champion Cross Keys." 1964 Baron wrestling (above) won the state championship by 13 points over 2nd place Cross Keys with seven state-ranked wrestlers: Kenneth Curl (1st), Steven Curl (1st), Ray Harrelson (1st), Donnie Massey (1st), Stephen Godlewski (3rd), Donald Jones (3rd) and Phillip Houston (4th). The Barons also won the region championship, and won the county championship over 2nd place Cross Keys. Seven Barons won individual county championships: Steve Curl, Rolly McDaris, Ken Curl, Steve Godlewski, Ray Harrelson, Tim Bice and Phil Houston.1965 Baron wrestling (above) won the state championship by 34 points over 2nd place teams Druid Hills and Dykes with ten state-ranked wrestlers: Kenneth Curl (1st), Stephen Godlewski (1st), James Hope (1st), Eddie Kavelage (1st), Randy Lane (2nd), Alan North (2nd), Orie McKenzie (2nd), Larry Wiggins (3rd), John Thibadeu (4th) and Phillip Houston (4th). The Barons also won the region championship, and won the county championship over 2nd-place Druid Hills. Six Barons won individual county championships: Eddie Kavelage, Larry Wiggins, Jimmy Hope, Tom McConnell, Alan North and Steve Godlewski. 1966 Baron wrestling (above) won the state championship by 15 points over 2nd place Willingham with six state-ranked wrestlers: Larry Graham (1st), Ronnie Griffis (1st), Randy Lane (1st), Fred Crispen (2nd), Tom McConnell (2nd), Eddie Kavelage (3rd) and Clark Binkley (4th). The Barons also won the region championship, and won the county championship over 2nd-place Druid Hills. Four Barons won individual county championships: Randy Lane, Ronnie Griffis, Larry Graham and Orie McKenzie. 1967 Baron wrestling (above) won the state championship by 28 points over 2nd place Willingham with eight state-ranked wrestlers: Larry Graham (1st), Eddie Kavelage (1st), Randy Lane (1st), Billy Saville (1st), Hal Schanker (1st), Harry Hendrix (2nd), Clark Binkley (4th) and Leonard Thibadeu (4th). The Barons won the region championship, and won the county championship over 2nd-place Druid Hills. 1968 Baron wrestling (above) placed 5th in state with three state-ranked wrestlers: Jerry Goldstein (1st), Mark Helms (1st) and Leonard Thibadeu (4th).

1969 Baron wrestling (above) placed 10th in state with two state-ranked wrestlers: John Zamoscinski (1st) and Leonard Thibadeu (3rd). Two Barons won individual county championships: Leonard Thibadeu and John Zamoscinski.

1970 Baron wrestling (above) placed 9th in state with two state-ranked wrestlers: John Zamoscinski (1st) and Joey Cheshire (3rd). John Zamoscinski also won an individual county championship and won all 20 of his matches with pins. After a slow start the team finished with a regular season record of 6-4.

1971 Baron wrestling (above) had one state ranked wrestler: Joey Cheshire (1st). Briarcliff placed fourth in region where five Barons qualified for the state tournament by placing in the region tournament: Joey Cheshire (1st), Sandy Groves (2nd), Bert Fergosi (3rd), Bill Steinhaus (3rd) and Mark McElroy (4th).

1972 Baron wrestling (above) placed 5th in state with four state-ranked wrestlers: Mike Perkins (1st), Bobby Saville (2nd), Bob Dlubac (2nd) and Jim Jennings (3rd). Bobby Saville also won an individual county championship.

1973 Baron wrestling (above) placed 5th in state with three state-ranked wrestlers: Bobby Saville (1st), John Vining (1st) and Wes Helms (4th). Briarcliff also placed 1st in region over 2nd place Chamblee where nine Barons qualified for the state tournament by placing in region: Jim Jennings (1st), Mark McElroy (1st), Reed Owens (1st), Bobby Saville (1st), John Vining (1st), Wyatt Helms (2nd), Matt Martin (2nd), David Saffan (2nd) and Steve Reep (4th). The Barons also placed 2nd in the county behind Chamblee with five county-ranked wrestlers: Jimmy Jennings (1st), Bobby Saville (1st), John Vining (2nd), Reed Owens (3rd), and Mark McElroy (4th). This team finished its regular season undefeated. Bobby Saville was named Most Oustanding Wrestler in the State of Georgia and earned a wrestling scholarship to the University of Florida. John Vining earned a wrestling scholarship to Georgia Tech.

1974 Baron wrestling (above) had two state-ranked wrestlers: Matt Martin (3rd) and David Paller (4th). The Barons placed 2nd in region behind first-place Towers where nine Barons qualified for the state tournament by placing in the region tournament: Matt Martin (1st), Kent Callahan (2nd), Ken Devaul (2nd), Mark Dunham (2nd), Bobby Mendel (2nd), Steve Reep (2nd), Ron Dunham (3rd), David Paller (3rd) and Lance Mendel (4th). Three Barons placed at the county tournament: Jorge Hernandez (3rd), Steve Cadranel (4th) and Lance Mendel (4th).

1975 Baron wrestling (above) placed 10th in state with two state-ranked wrestlers: Lance Mendel (3rd) and Jimmy Van Buren (4th). The Barons placed 2nd in region behind first-place Towers where four Barons qualified for the state tournament by placing in the region tournament: Jimmy Van Buren (1st), Joe Brown (2nd), Lance Mendel (2nd) and Bobby Mendel (3rd). The Barons finished 3rd in county with four county-ranked wrestlers: Jimmy Van Buren (1st), Ron Dunham (3rd), Lance Mendel (3rd) and Bobby Mendel (4th). Lance Mendel and Jimmy Van Buren completed undefeated regular seasons.

1976 Baron wrestling (above) had two state-ranked wrestlers: Jimmy Van Buren (2nd) and Lance Mendel (3rd). Jimmy Van Buren also won the region championship. The Barons finished 3rd in DeKalb County with four county-ranked wrestlers: Jimmy Van Buren (1st), Ron Dunham (3rd), Bobby Mendel (3rd), Lance Mendel (3rd).

1986 Baron wrestling placed 4th in region where seven Barons qualified for the state tournament by placing in the region tournament: Jerry McDaniel (2nd), Tuvaya Billingley (3rd), Ralph Clark (3rd), Andrew Petkas (3rd), William Royster (3rd), David Brown (4th) and Kenny Walker (4th).

1987 Baron wrestling (above), in the final Briarcliff wrestling season, placed 7th in state with three state-ranked wrestlers: William Royster (2nd), Jerry McDaniel (3rd), Tuvaya Billingsley (4th). The Barons placed 1st in region by 32 points over second-place Avondale where eight wrestlers qualified for the state tournament by placing in the region tournament: Tuvaya Billingsley (1st), Ralph Clark (1st), Jerry McDaniel (1st), William Royster (1st), Tyrone Steed (1st), Dexter Prater (2nd), Kenny Walker (3rd) and Sean Harris (4th). They finished the regular season with an 8-6-1 record.
